My dog hated the last vest.

Most vests get their first try mid-storm, the hardest moment to accept anything new. The plan introduces this one on calm days first, a few seconds at a time with treats. If it still isn't right for your dog, the Storm Night Promise covers you.

Will it be too hot in summer?

It's a soft, breathable cotton-blend jersey. On warm nights keep the room cool, leave water out, and take it off if they seem warm.

What if it doesn't fit?

We'll swap it, free. Not sure? Use the size finder, and go up one if they're between sizes.

How it fits, sizing and safety

What's in the kit

  • The Storm Wrap. Soft, stretchy cotton-blend jersey in Charcoal. It zips along the body, with a ribbed collar and a wide hook-and-loop belly band, for gentle, even pressure around the chest and back, like a firm hug.
  • The Lick Mat (worth $19). A 20 × 20 cm silicone mat with a spatula. Spread on something they love and give them a slow, steady job while it rumbles.
  • The Storm Ready plan. Our four-week, step-by-step plan: setting up a den, introducing the wrap on calm days, gentle sound practice, a storm-night checklist and when to see your vet. It only comes with the kit, and the link arrives with your order confirmation.

How it goes on

  1. Zip it up along the body, with the stretchy ribbed collar sitting at the neck.
  2. Wrap the belly band around underneath.
  3. Fasten the hook-and-loop so it feels snug, like a hug, never tight. Two fingers should slide underneath.

Sizing

Measure your dog's back, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and weigh them. Our size finder does the rest. Sizes run from XS (2 kg) to XXXL (45 kg). Between two sizes? Go up one. Wrong size? We'll swap it, free.

Every dog is different. Some find a snug wrap comforting and some don't, and the wrap isn't a treatment for anxiety. Always supervise your dog while they wear it, and take it off once things are calm. If their fear is severe or getting worse, please see your vet.

Sound familiar?

The first rumble. Then the panting, the pacing, and the hiding behind the toilet.

  1. A rumble you barely notice. They noticed.

  2. Panting, pacing, following you from room to room.

  3. Wedged behind the toilet. You're on the bathroom floor beside them.

  4. A quiet spell. You both wait for the next bang.

  5. It finally passes. Nobody really slept.

Same storm. A dog with a plan.

It isn’t “just how storm nights are”.

You can't stop the storm. But you can change what happens inside your home when it arrives, and most of that work happens on the calm days before. Welfare groups like RSPCA Australia give owners clear, practical steps. We've put them in a kit.

Tried a calming vest before?

Why the vest “did nothing”.

It probably wasn't you, and it probably wasn't your dog. It was the timing.

  1. First boomYou remember the vest is in a drawer somewhere.
  2. 8:04 pmThe hook-and-loop rips open. Some dogs hate that sound.
  3. 8:06 pmYou're trying to dress a dog who only wants to hide.
  4. 8:30 pmYou build a den on the bathroom floor, in the dark.
  5. Next stormThe vest “did nothing”, so it stays in the drawer.

A 2024 paper in the Australian Veterinary Journal notes that dogs should be familiar with a wrap before a scary event, and that some dogs find having it put on, or the hook-and-loop sound, distressing.

The Storm Plan

Every Aussie home has a bushfire plan. Does your dog have a storm plan?

You don't work out where the exits are once there's smoke. Storm night is the same. The kit is built around four simple steps, set up before the noise starts.

  1. Make a safe base

Set up a den before the season: a crate or quiet corner with a blanket over it, away from windows. Close the blinds, lock the gates, check their tag.

  2. Wrap on early

Introduce the wrap on calm days first, a minute at a time. On the night, it goes on before the first rumble, not halfway through.

  3. Stay steady

Your dog reads you. Sit nearby, speak low and carry on as normal. If they come to you for comfort, that's okay.

  4. Reward the calm

Fill the Lick Mat and give them a slow, steady job. In the weeks before, add a few minutes of quiet storm-sound practice.

Why a plan, not just a product

Owners rate preparation well ahead of a wrap on its own.

In a 2024 survey of Sydney dog owners, a wrap or jacket was the most-used product for firework fear. But when owners rated what they'd tried, training came out well ahead.

Training ahead of time (counterconditioning)25 of 42
A wrap or jacket12 of 44

That's why the Storm Kit leads with the plan, and the wrap is one part of it.

Number of owners who rated each approach as effective. Self-reported, opt-in survey, not a controlled trial (Mann et al., Australian Veterinary Journal, 2024). Vet-prescribed medication was rated highest of all, so if your dog's fear is severe, please talk to your vet.

The advice it follows

RSPCA Australia's fireworks advice reads like a checklist.

Keep pets inside and secure. Give them somewhere to hide. Keep things calm. Check their ID. Prepare early. Every step in the kit follows that advice, in order, with the details filled in.

    The wrap

Some dogs love a snug hug. Some don't. Find out on a calm day.

The Storm Wrap gives gentle, even pressure around the chest and back. Some pets find that comforting and some don't, and the middle of a thunderstorm is no time to find out. So you find out over dinner, a minute at a time.

Where the idea comes from. People have swaddled babies for centuries. In the 1960s, animal scientist Temple Grandin built a “squeeze machine” after finding firm, even pressure calming. A snug wrap borrows that idea. It isn't proof it will suit your dog, which is exactly why you try it on a quiet day first.

    Say hello

Lay the wrap on the floor near them and drop a treat on it. Let them sniff it. If the hook-and-loop sound bothers them, open the belly band in another room first.

Going wellLoose body, soft ears, still taking treats.

Go back a stepFreezing, lip licking, a tucked tail, pawing at it.

Some dogs never take to a wrap, and that's okay. The rest of the plan still helps, and you're covered by the Storm Night Promise.

    What's in the box

Everything for storm night, in one box.

A wrap on its own is one piece. The Storm Kit comes with the rest: something to keep them busy, and a plan for the weeks before.

    A note from Oliver

    Why Boop & Bean exists.

I run Boop & Bean from the Gold Coast, right in the storm belt. My cat, Chilli, gets scared when the storms roll in. What helps him is his blanket: something familiar and safe.

That's the whole idea behind the kit. Have the safe, familiar things ready before the noise starts, so you're not making it up on the bathroom floor.

    Good questions

    Before you order

Still wondering? Email hello@boopandbean.com and a real person will reply.

Will it stop my dog being scared?

No wrap can promise that, and every dog is different. Some find a snug wrap comforting and some don't. That's why the kit comes with a plan: a safe base, a calm routine and something to lick, all set up before the noise. If their fear is severe, getting worse, or they hurt themselves, please see your vet. The plan works alongside anything your vet suggests.

My dog hates wearing things, or the Velcro sound.

That's what the calm-day introduction is for. Start with the wrap on the floor next to a treat, then a few seconds on their back, then a minute zipped up during dinner. The wrap zips on and only the belly band uses hook-and-loop, so open it away from them before you start. If they freeze or try to back away, go back a step. Some dogs never take to a wrap, and the rest of the plan still helps.

Is it too hot for a Queensland summer?

It's a soft, breathable cotton-blend jersey, but it's still a layer. On hot or humid nights keep the room cool, give them water, and take it off if they seem warm. Panting can mean heat as well as fear. Never leave it on while they're unsupervised.

How long can they wear it?

Put it on before the noise starts and take it off once things are calm. It's for loud nights with you nearby, not for all day or overnight.

Does it help with fireworks too?

The plan covers both storms and fireworks. Dogs can react differently to each, so the sound practice includes both, and the storm-night checklist has extra steps for fireworks nights, like locking gates and checking their tag.

    When will it arrive?

We ship from our partner warehouse overseas, tracked and free on the kit. Delivery usually takes 8 to 15 business days, so order before you need it. That also gives you time for the calm-day introduction.

    What if it doesn't fit?

We'll swap it, free. Use our size finder first, and if they're between sizes, go up one.

What if it isn't right for my dog?

That's the Storm Night Promise. Email us within 30 days of delivery and we'll refund your order. You keep everything, so there's nothing to post back.

Is the plan just a PDF?

It's a six-page, printable plan with a week-by-week schedule: safety checks, den set-up, the day-by-day wrap introduction, gentle sound practice, a storm-night and fireworks checklist for the fridge, and clear signs it's time to see your vet. It only comes with the kit.

    Can my cat wear it?

This one is cut for dogs. Cats have their own, The Storm Kit for Cats. For most cats, the best place to start is a covered hiding spot like the Hideaway.
