Why a hiding spot matters
Cats cope with stress by hiding. In a small randomised study of shelter cats (PLoS ONE, 2019), cats given a hiding box showed lower stress scores within two days and settled about a week sooner. Animal welfare groups recommend giving cats a covered hiding place, ideally with a soft blanket inside, during fireworks and storms.
How to set it up
- Put it somewhere quiet, ideally a little off the ground, a week or two before storm season or fireworks.
- Add a treat or a piece of your worn clothing inside, and let them explore it on their own terms.
- Never close a cat in. The open front means they can always come and go.
